IPL Hair Removal: Case Study

Case Study 1.

Sean is a 26year old male who presented to Maram’s Clinic with unwanted hair on his neck, shoulders and upper back.

Sean has been suffering from ingrown hair on his neck for a few years. He informed his treating Nurse that he shaves his face (including neck) on a daily basis and that this has caused his skin to be very sensitive, dry and irritant. He clipps the hair on his shoulders and upper back in summer so he can feel comfortable and confident when exposing these areas.

Sean has fair skin (Skin type 3 as per Fitzpatrick skin scale) and has dark hair. A consultation and patch test was completed prior treatment. Sean shared questions and concerns with his treating Nurse. He has given consent to share his treatment journey and photos with viewers.

Treatment 1. 4th November 2009

The area is cleaned and shaved prior to the treatment. The nurse has programmed the IPL settings according to Sean’s skin and hair type. A cooling gel is applied to the area to keep Sean comfortable throughout the treatment. A highlighter is used to mark the area being treated, this helps the treating nurse work in a pattern and ensure the whole area is covered. The treatment head is applied firmly on the skin and pulses of light are released into the skin. The skins immediate response is redness, this is a normal and desired effect . A laser aid gel is applied on the skin post treatment to assist with the skin cooling. The treament for his neck, shoulders and upper back took approximately 55 minutes.

Sean has been advised of some home care instructions. He is to allow the redness to subside post treatment, not to aggrevate the skin by exfoliating, applying creams or perfume or expose the areas to heat or sun. He has been given an exfoliant glove and is to exfoliate the treated areas 3 days post treatment (3-4 times a week).. He is to contact the clinic for questions or concerns.

Sean has been scheduled for treatment 2 in 8 weeks time.
