What is IPL?
IPL is the abbreviation of Intense Pulsed Light. It is a filtered Non-coherent broad spectrum light. IPL has a Wavelength between 515 to 1200 nm.
What IPL can do?
IPL can perform various treatments, these include the following:
- permanently reduce unwanted hair
- Pigmentation and age spots
- Vascular lesions
- Shrinkage of pores
- Rejuvenation on full face, neck, chest and hands
No technology besides IPL can accomplish these five objectives with no down time.
Process of IPL Hair Removal
Before going on to describe how our IPL system works, it is best to define some terminology:
Epidermis- The upper visible layer of skin.
Dermis- The layer of skin where hair follicles and blood vessels are situated
Wavelength- The distance between one peak or crest of a wave of light, heat, or other energy and the next corresponding peak or crest
Melanin- a brown pigment in the skin and elsewhere. It is made in melanocytes, which are cells in the deepest layer of the epidermis, and these distribute granules of pigment to the other skin cells
Hair Shaft- The part of the hair that is above the skin
Hair Follicle- A tubular infolding of the epidermis containing the root of a hair
Anagen- The stage of active hair growth
Hair Reduction- Percentage of terminal hairs absent after treatment, compared with the number before treatment
Light and Hair Interaction
The goal of IPL hair removal is to permanently destroy the hair bulb that will be unable to generate the follicle and then the stem of the hair. The are three phases alternate in hair cycles and their length varies in different parts of the body. The anagen phase is characterised by the formation of melanin, this is the reason that allows IPL to work effectively only on the active hair follicles.
The IPL treatment handpiece is placed on the skin of the targeted area and a bright light is released which travels through the epidermis. Melanin in the hair shaft absorbs the light which is transformed to heat. The heat is conducted to the surrounding follicular cells and thus damages them.
The skin responds immediately to this interaction, Perifolliclar erythema (Oedema- swelling) is created. This response is very normal due to the heat in the epidermis. Laser aid (Cooling gel) is applied post treatment to increase the cooling in the epidermis.
The hair is detached from the follicle and falls out after 1-2 weeks. The patient can encourage the hair detachment by exfoliating the treated area after day three of treatment.
How does IPL work to remove unwanted hair?
Intense Pulsed Light or IPL hair removal is the latest technology which provides long-lasting results for permanent hair reduction in both women and men. The Intense Pulsed Light, (IPL) system works by emitting pulses of intense light into the hair follicles. The dark pigment in the follicles absorbs the intense pulsed light and converts it into heat which loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for new growth.
After the IPL hair removal treatment, much of the hair removed will not grow back for months, and will grow back thinner and lighter in colour. Some hairs will permanently be destroyed and will not grow back at all. With multiple intense pulsed light treatments, clients will see a significant and permanent reduction in hair growth in the area(s) treated.
Many people find IPL hair removal to be significantly more convenient and comfortable than other methods of hair removal such as waxing, plucking, shaving, electrolysis, and laser hair removal. IPL treatments can take anywhere between 5-60 minutes, depending on size of area. Unlike waxing and electrolysis, hair does not need to grow out before your treatment.
Prior to your IPL treatment, a free consultation and patch test is completed. For the best results, 3-6 treatments are recommended per area. We generally recommend 4-6 weeks between treatments to reflect the natural growth cycle of the hair.
Our Lumenis Quantum IPL provides safe and effective treatment for all skin types up to Fitzpatrick type 5. With our IPL system we are able to treat all body locations and a broad range of hair colours. Unfortunately there is no effective treatment options for white (grey), red or light blonde hair. We are able to treat all hair depths, diameters and densities.
With IPL treatment you can remain virtually hair-free all year round.

Difference between Laser and IPL technology
Laser and IPL have been used to remove unwanted hair for many years with a high degree of success; however, to be accurate we must call it “Permanent Hair Reduction.” According to FDA rules manufacturers may not claim that laser and IPL hair removal is permanent unless the FDA determines that there is sufficient data to demonstrate such results.
What this means in practice is that although most hair will be removed over a course of treatment, some hair will remain and some may re-grow, usually much lighter and finer, therefore, occasional top-up treatments may be needed.
Laser and IPL use energy in the form of light to destroy the hair follicle. However, there are some distinct differences between Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems.
One is in the area that can be treated in one go and the treatment speed. Generally IPL treatment heads are up to 8 times larger than the small spot produced by lasers and therefore treatments are much quicker. Another difference is the wavelength of light produced. Lasers produce light with one specific wavelength whilst IPL utilise an entire waveband. Different wavelengths penetrate the skin to different depths so using IPL is like using a group of lasers in a single treatment. IPL provides the ability to change the wavelength of the light, making them more versatile in the range of treatments.
IPL is gentler on the skin than lasers. IPL has a separate cooling system around the sapphire of the treatment head, in addition to the inbuilt cooling system. This reduces the risk of pigment changes in the skin.
IPL also allows individual selection for different treatments. IPL has pre-configured settings for different skin and hair types. This enhances clinical results and minimises any hair removal side effects.
A summary of the differences:
Intense Pulsed Light |
Laser |
||
| Minimal Patient Discomfort | Painful and uncomfortable | ||
| usually no anaesthetic or cold packs are required prior to treatment | Topical anaesthetics are usually requested or a cold pack for several minutes before treatments | ||
| Less procedural time All treatments can be done in less than an hour | Extensive procedural time required for small and large areas | ||
| Safe for all skin types, a specific handpiece for ethnic & tanned skin | difficult to treat with a shortwave length lasers on people with ethnic or tanned skin | ||
| Longer wavelength systems penetrate more energy to effective destroy the hair root | More treatments are normally required to achieve better results | ||
|
Laser light scatters energy to surrounding skin to cause potential irritation or burns to the skin |
Here is some related information on IPL Laser’s.
What skin type are you?
We all have a different skin type, which means we should have different programs and settings when getting treated by Laser and IPL. As mentioned earlier, IPL has pre-configured settings for different skin and hair types. Lasers do not have this option and therefore can’t be safe for all hair removal clients. If you can’t alter the settings and programs on the system, how can you treat a client with tanned skin and dark hair? The risk of skin burn and pigmentation will be high.
However, not to worry at all when getting treatment at Maram’s Clinic. Our IPL system can treat all skin types even the summer sun lovers (Not recommended for artificial tan-solarium must not be used three weeks prior treatment and three weeks post treatment). We can treat you all year round no matter what skin type you have. All we must do is complete a skin type analysis during consultation. View our Fitzpatrick skin type chart to have your skin analysis.
The programme and settings used for your skin and hair type determines your results.
IPL Hair Removal is the most advanced and effective permanent hair reduction process now available.
